Frequently Asked Dental Questions
Here are a few questions and answers we have compiled for you. If you’re not sure, ask the doctor.
How many times a day should I brush my teeth?
Most dental professionals recommend that you brush your teeth at least twice a day. Brushing after every meal (and flossing at least once a day) is also a good way to maintain dental health.
When should a child have his/her first dental appointment?
A child should have his first dental appointment no later than his third birthday. Many dentists recommend a child have his first appointment when his first tooth comes in.
What are some signs of dental problems?
Many people don’t see the dentist on a regular basis. They only go when they feel they have a problem. While these patients may feel they are saving money, it usually ends up costing much more in both dollars and time. The reason for this is that most dental problems don't have any symptoms until they reach the advanced stages.
An example is tooth decay. Many people feel that if nothing hurts, then nothing is wrong. But tooth decay doesn't hurt! Until, that is, it gets close to the nerve of the tooth.
Then a root canal and crown are usually necessary, instead of the small filling, which could have been placed several years ago when the cavity was small. We can usually detect a cavity 3-4 years before it may develop any symptoms. It is not uncommon to see a patient with a tremendous cavity and they have never felt a thing!
What can I do about my stained teeth?
Whitening is usually the best method of getting rid of stains and discoloration. This process involves the placement of a bleaching solution on the teeth. The solution is held in place by a tray that fits over the teeth. Bleaching is a safe, effective and relatively easy means of whitening your teeth.
